RHCP at Knebworth

Having bought tickets, well wristbands, months and months ago over the Internet, they finally arrived 2 weeks before the concert, I know that's still in plenty of time but I have to say I was starting to think I may have bought them from a dodgy website, but No ... they arrived.

Saturday June 23rd was the day of the concert and living locally to Knebworth Park I knew that the roads were going to be rammed with traffic so decided to make my way to my daughters flat fairly early to miss any traffic congestion. My sister joined me and we took a walk from the flat to Knebworth Park it only took 20 minutes so not too bad at all, however once in the park it was 'a hike' - uphill. No sweat, we're fit  ;)

Once we'd had our wristbands zapped and our bags checked, for cans or glass bottles, we were in. The first place we saw was a stall called The Chinese Wok, that was to be our meeting place throughout the day & also ended up being a source of amusement. If we said Chinese Wok once we must have said it a hundred times throughout the day to the point where it was virtually impossible to say it without laughing. The next stall spotted was the bar. Goes without saying really doesn't it.

After a while other family members arrived and wanted to find us. Over a very poor reception on the mobile my 2 sisters managed to agree to meeting at "The Chinese Wok" (I wish I'd taken a photo of that stall). We found it hard to find each other there were so many people about. We even thought there must be 2 Chinese Woks. We then realised that, in fact, we had been standing right next to each other just looking the other way.

A friend arrived and called me on my mobile just as the 1st band, Reverend and the Makers started their set. It was almost impossible to hear her. I gave the phone to my sister who tried telling her where to meet, The Chinese Wok of course, but the reception was so bad that the call was made, and the instructions repeated, at least 10 times. The friend never did make it to us.

The 2nd band up were The Wombats, people were still arriving at this stage and to be fair I didn't really pay much attention to the first 2 acts. Although they sounded ok.

The 3rd band was the one my nieces and nephew were really waiting to see. Dizzee Rascal & its at this point that we lost one of them til the end of the concert. She was off. Well Dizzee had up bopping around having a laugh, which did prove a little difficult as 2 of my sisters and myself were left holding bottles of drink for the others, you try jumping up and down without spilling their precious amber nectar.

So far we had been fairly lucky with the weather, rain had been forecast but not until 9pm, a couple of very quick light showers made us don our raincoats for a short spell but otherwise it was dry.

At 9pm, the rain came and so did The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This was the band I had been waiting for and they didn't disappoint. They played some songs that I hadn't heard before but then the classics came out. Californication, By The Way, Under The Bridge & my favourite Higher Ground

The rain was coming down but we were bopping.

As the concert came to a close my sister was arranging to meet her children at ... you guessed it, The Chinese Wok.

The walk back was a slightly quicker route but my sister and I managed to find ourselves right behind the most drunken person of the night who could barely walk let a lone in a straight line. He thought it was fun to throw the bollards around, there's always one!!

Our lift was waiting when we arrived at our designated pick up point. Not a bad day at all :)))

What to write about?

I want to write blogs that are interesting for lots of you to read.

My first thought was to write about Liverpool Football Club, the biggest passion in my life outside of my family & what I know the most about but I want the blogs to be interesting to more than just Liverpool or football fans.

My next thought was to write about different aspects of my business, Holistic & Beauty therapy, but who wants to read about massage & waxing etc, its even boring for me to write about it so I can't see it gripping anyone else.

So I am back to square one. What to write about? It doesn't help that I read my sons blog every day, he is so much more interesting & wittier than I am, he's only 18 so he has a life. I seem to spend all my days either out at work, home at work or doing house work, really nothing to write home about. Well I do watch sport occasionally too ;-) but it's not like it rules my life or anything. *cough cough*

So if you choose to follow my blogs you may find that the subjects are quite random, but hopefully not boring.

I was at the Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert last week, so I could write about that and I'm going to a school reunion next week so, watch this space, that could be a good laugh.

Salon Treatments - Swedish Massage

Probably the most often asked for treatment is Swedish Massage. No surprises for me there. I suffer with problems in my lower back as well as my shoulders & neck so for me there is no better treatment.  After just one treatment most of my clients notice a vast improvement in their muscular tension and feel virtually pain free.

Swedish Massage is an uplifting and energising massage that stimulates circulation and generates an immediate sense of well-being. Generally five styles of long, flowing strokes are used during this massage known as effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking.

Massage therapy has been widely practised with its health benefits greatly valued, since ancient times. It encourages relaxation, helps reduce the effects of stress and brings about a feeling of well-being.  It has also shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness & helpful to individuals with poor circulation.

Soft and deep tissue massage can give relief from many common complaints by stimulating the circulation, relaxing the muscles and nervous system, aiding digestion and improving mobility and flexibility.

Even with clients I massage every week I can honestly say no two treatments are exactly the same, as I massage over the muscles, I assess the needs & adapt the massage accordingly.

There are many benefits to receiving Swedish Massage and everyone will notice them in different ways, however, some of the things you may experience are,
an improved circulation, improvement with a sluggish system, improvement to skin tone and texture. An increased lymphatic flow which speeds up the removal of toxins from the body.
Muscle tone and suppleness is improved, reduction in muscular pain.

A Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage generally lasts between 20 - 30 minutes and a Full Body Massage lasting at least a full hour.

Salon Treatments - Holistic Facial

Many treatments are offered in a Holistic & Beauty Salon so I thought I'd give a little insight into what some of these treatments are all about.

As my heart is in the Holistic side of this business I have decided to start with that, but firstly what does Holistic mean ... Holistic health is a concept in medical practice upholding that all aspects of people's needs, psychological, physical and social should be taken into account and seen as a whole.

Therefore all holistic treatments are actually treating the whole body on a physical & psychological level.

One of the most relaxing Holistic treatments I perform and equally love to receive is the Holistic Facial.

Looking good starts with great skin, and aromatherapy can help you achieve this in various ways. Holistic Facial is a massage using essential oils, and has the same principles as aromatherapy. The essential oils are so minute that they will get through the five layers of  skin and be carried around the body through circulation. Holistic Facial concentrates on the the upper body, neck, head and face. The remarkable penetrative properties of essential ils make them excellent moisturisers.

The facial skin is the most delicate skin on the body. Having a good cleansing routine and massage can really help the skin stay in good condition by cleansing and draining the lymph which filters out the waste products. Regular facial is also very good for keeping wrinkles at bay, by the massage techniques applied.

Having a professional facial treatment has so many therapeutic benefits. Our face is the 'front' that we present to the world, and it can only too clearly show all the tensions and stress in our lives. When we're tired, unhappy, run-down, stressed or ill, it shows in our faces. Holistic Facial is soothing and relaxing, and the results are amazing.  Wrinkles seem reduced and the skin appears rejuvenated, giving a much sought after 'instant face lift' without painful invasive surgery.

Introduce a Holistic Facial Massage into your daily life and you'll see the difference. The Aromatherapy oils, cleansers and toners have so many powerful benefits to help with all types and conditions.

For many this is a very soothing and relaxing treatment. A lot of tension can build up in the head, neck and face. The different techniques included in the massage help to remove congestion and release tension.

The face is cleansed, tones and gently scrubbed, then massaged, using essential oils to suit your skin type.
Three different forms of massage may be used. The European Method followed by Pressure Point and/or Lymph Drainage Massage.
A mask is applied to the face and left for 10 minutes during which time a short scalp massage is carried out.

A hydrating moisturiser finishes this facial treatment.

A Holistic Facial treatment lasts for about 45 minutes.

Health & Safety

HEALTH AND SAFETY

1. As a holistic & beauty therapist my responsibilities under:

a) The Health and Safety at Work Act would be to provide a safe working environment by
    • identifying potential hazards in the salon
    • carrying out security procedures
    • carrying out emergency procedures
    • ensuring the health and safety of all members of staff while at work and of my clientele

b) COSHH would be to ensure that I was fully aware of the substances I was using and always follow the manufacturers guidelines.

c) Legislation regarding electricity would be to ensure that all electrical equipment are tested once every year to ensure they are fully functional.

2.
a) It is essential to follow safety precautions for treatments to ensure no harm comes to either your client or yourself.

b) A patch test is required for sensitivity when a client informs you that they have skin allergies or sensitive skin and it should be performed at least 24 hours before a treatment is due.

c) It is advisable to be insured as I would be liable for accidents by my employees to either themselves or clients during their time at work.

d) Should my client have either cuts or abrasions then I would provide them with a plaster and ask them to cover them up.

3.
a) Should my client be positioned incorrectly, I would make the therapy more difficult to perform and therefore run the risk of straining myself.

b) I can avoid potential discomfort and injury by ensuring that the couch is at the right height for me and that my client is positioned correctly. I should stand square to the client, be relaxed with my shoulders down.

c) It is important to ensure that my client is comfortable because I want them to enjoy the experience, feel relaxed and want to come back for more.

4. It is necessary to use personal protective equipment when:
    • you or your client have cuts or abrasions
    • using essential oils
    • cleansing yourself before, between and after carrying out therapy

5.
a) Manufacturers instructions should always be followed to protect yourself and your client against problems that may arise from misuse, failure to do would also jeopardise any case you may have against the manufacturer.
b) Five salon guidelines for the safety of clients are:
    • Ensure all spillage's are cleaned up immediately
    • Ensure a medical questionnaire is completed prior to first treatment and periodically thereafter
    • Wash hands before and after treatments with an antibacterial soap to prevent spread of infection
    • Cover up cuts and abrasions
    • Ensure all fire exits are kept clear at all times

8.
a) Any accidents and emergencies should be reported to:
    • your tutor or member of staff whilst in college
    • senior therapist or manager when in the work place

b) Any infectious diseases should firstly be reported to your tutor/manager and then to the Incident Contact Centre for RIDDOR ( Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) either by your tutor/manager or yourself.

9. It is important to record and report breaches of security because:
    • people need to be aware that an incident has happened
    • failure to do so may result in crimes going unnoticed, leading to financial loss and/or damage to your business reputation.
    • in order to make a claim under your insurance you will need a crime number which you will receive after you have reported the incident to the police.

10. Two guidelines for security for:
a) myself are
    • when taking on a client for the first time I discover how they became aware of my profession and the exact nature of the treatment required, and ensure a colleague is nearby
    • keep all personal possessions locked away out of sight

b) my client are
    • to advise them to avoid bringing any valuables with them to the salon
    • to advise them to bring their possessions into the treatment room with them

c) my stock are
    • to keep products out of sight in a secured cupboard
    • to keep a record of products placed in or taken out of the secured cupboard.

A little about Me

My name is Jacqueline Woolnough, I have been married for 28 years and have 4 children. I was brought up in Stevenage but have now lived in Letchworth Garden City (the next town) for 22 years.

I am an avid Liverpool  fanatical supporter (fan just doesn't cut it) and have been since the age of 9. I'm damn sure in another life I must have been a scouser, it just feels right.

I love listening to music, my tastes vary greatly, but if it gets me moving then I like it. I love to dance. My favourite band of all time is The Beatles

but throughout my childhood I love Wings, The Police & The Jam.

A few of my favourite songs are Young Girl by Gary Puckett And The Union Gap

Don't Stop Me Now by Queen

and You Do Something To Me by Paul Weller
