1.
As a holistic & beauty therapist my responsibilities under:
a)
The Health and Safety at Work Act would be to provide a
safe working environment by
- identifying potential hazards in the salon
- carrying out security procedures
- carrying out emergency procedures
- ensuring the health and safety of all members of staff while at work and of my clientele
b)
COSHH would be to ensure that I was fully aware of the substances I
was using and always follow the manufacturers guidelines.
c)
Legislation regarding electricity would be to ensure that all
electrical equipment are tested once every year to ensure they are
fully functional.
2.
a)
It is essential to follow safety precautions for treatments to ensure
no harm comes to either your client or yourself.
b)
A patch test is required for sensitivity when a client informs you
that they have skin allergies or sensitive skin and it should be
performed at least 24 hours before a treatment is due.
c)
It is advisable to be insured as I would be
liable for accidents by my employees to either themselves or clients
during their time at work.
d)
Should my client have either cuts or abrasions then I would provide
them with a plaster and ask them to cover them up.
3.
a)
Should my client be positioned incorrectly, I would make the
therapy more difficult to perform and therefore run the risk of
straining myself.
b)
I can avoid potential discomfort and injury by ensuring that the
couch is at the right height for me and that my client is positioned
correctly. I should stand square to the client, be relaxed with my
shoulders down.
c)
It is important to ensure that my client is comfortable because I
want them to enjoy the experience, feel relaxed and want to come back
for more.
4.
It is necessary to use personal protective equipment when:
- you or your client have cuts or abrasions
- using essential oils
- cleansing yourself before, between and after carrying out therapy

a)
Manufacturers instructions should always be followed to protect
yourself and your client against problems that may arise from misuse,
failure to do would also jeopardise any case you may have against the
manufacturer.
b)
Five salon guidelines for the safety of clients are:
- Ensure all spillage's are cleaned up immediately
- Ensure a medical questionnaire is completed prior to first treatment and periodically thereafter
- Wash hands before and after treatments with an antibacterial soap to prevent spread of infection
- Cover up cuts and abrasions
- Ensure all fire exits are kept clear at all times
8.
a)
Any accidents and emergencies should be reported to:
- your tutor or member of staff whilst in college
- senior therapist or manager when in the work place
b)
Any infectious diseases should firstly be reported to your
tutor/manager and then to the Incident Contact Centre for RIDDOR (
Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences
Regulations) either by your tutor/manager or yourself.
9.
It is important to record and report breaches of security because:
- people need to be aware that an incident has happened
- failure to do so may result in crimes going unnoticed, leading to financial loss and/or damage to your business reputation.
- in order to make a claim under your insurance you will need a crime number which you will receive after you have reported the incident to the police.
10.
Two guidelines for security for:
a)
myself are
- when taking on a client for the first time I discover how they became aware of my profession and the exact nature of the treatment required, and ensure a colleague is nearby
- keep all personal possessions locked away out of sight
b)
my client are
- to advise them to avoid bringing any valuables with them to the salon
- to advise them to bring their possessions into the treatment room with them
c)
my stock are
- to keep products out of sight in a secured cupboard
- to keep a record of products placed in or taken out of the secured cupboard.
